New feature

Custom categories
for the way you track money

Kachink now lets every user shape their own category list, whether you track expenses through Claude, another MCP client, or the dashboard inside your chat.

Your categories no longer have to match everyone else's

Until now, Kachink used one fixed set of 12 categories for everyone: Software, Travel, Food, Office, Rent, Utilities, Marketing, Equipment, Education, Healthcare, Entertainment, and Other. That worked as a starting point, but it was too rigid once your own system became clear.

Maybe Food should be Groceries. Maybe you never use Office. Maybe you want Client meals, Subscriptions, Payroll, or Family. Custom categories let your Kachink MCP server follow the labels that make sense to you, without changing anything for users who are happy with the default list.

Start small, then clean up as you go

1

Ask Claude to add a category

The first time you ask Claude to create a category, Kachink copies the 12 defaults into your personal list and adds the new one you asked for. Until you do that, your account keeps using the shared defaults, so existing workflows keep working.

2

Rename or remove what you do not need

You can rename Food to Groceries, or Travel to Client travel. Renaming updates every past transaction and recurring rule that used the old name, so reports stay consistent. If you remove a category that has transactions, Kachink asks whether to move them in bulk to another category or keep the old label on history while hiding it from new entries.

3

Manage categories from chat or the dashboard

You can handle categories in plain language through Claude, or use the new Manage categories panel in the dashboard to add, rename, and delete inline. There is also a bulk edit for moving many transactions at once, such as everything in Travel before March into Other.

Categories should be intentional

Kachink will not silently invent categories just because a message could fit a new label. If Claude tries to log something to a category you do not have, Kachink stops and asks you to pick an existing category or create the new one on purpose.

That extra check keeps your list clean. It helps avoid near duplicates like Food, Groceries, Meals, and Eating out all appearing because of slightly different wording. Custom categories are opt-in and reversible, so you can tune the system without committing to a new taxonomy forever.

Common questions

Do I have to customize my categories?

No. If you do nothing, Kachink keeps using the default 12 categories.

What happens when I rename a category?

Kachink relabels past transactions and recurring rules that used the old name, so your history and future entries stay aligned.

Will deleting a category delete my transactions?

No. If the category has transactions, you choose whether to move them to another category or keep them labeled as they are.

Can Claude create categories automatically?

Not silently. Kachink asks you to confirm whether to use an existing category or create a new one.
